Thomas Payne ran through enemy gunfire to join his comrades, who were engaged in combat with entrenched terrorists. The building had begun to burn, yet Payne climbed to the roof and engaged the enemy from above. Knowing that the hostages were running out of time, he headed for the main entrance. Regardless of the many enemies and blazing fire, he was the first man to storm the building. After freeing the hostages, Payne kept returning to the inferno to make sure that absolutely no one was left behind.
