We are witnessing something profound: A very detailed view of the 1km wide Honeycomb Terrain Crater near the North Pole of Mars!

This image of honeycomb terrain near the North Pole of Mars was taken by HiRISE. The surface is covered in carbon dioxide frost that has condensed from the atmosphere. The annual variability in atmospheric pressure on Mars is about 25% and this is largely due to the cycle of condensation and sublimation of CO2 in the polar regions.
